Our StorySkydyne's Heritage

Since 1939, the Skydyne Company has provided innovative ruggedized
containers and products.

Skydyne was involved in the earliest stages of the development of sandwich construction (two relatively thin material “skins” bonded to a lightweight core). The first known application in the U.S. was an aileron built by Skydyne for the F4U Corsair during World War II. Sandwich construction has since been accepted as one of the strongest known. In the 1940’s, Skydyne introduced and patented the use of sandwich construction in the manufacture of its lightweight, durable Veteran case series.

Skydyne pioneered the use of compression-molded, fiber-glass-reinforced plastic as a transit case material in 1951. In the late 1960’s, Skydyne manufactured the cases that transported the lunar landers to Kennedy Space Center as well as containers that carried food and cargo on the Apollo moon missions. Today, the Skydyne Company is a prominent supplier of lightweight, impact-resistant cases that are used by the U.S. military and defense contractors in a variety of applications. In addition, Skydyne has applied its expertise to commercial markets, offering container solutions that protect fragile and valuable contents in transit.
